Cannot sync iPod Classic; iTunes not responding

Hey all,

I have a new problem with my iPod Classic and iTunes. I never had any problems with it until yesterday. I have updated iTunes to its latest version a while back (12.0) and it was syncing perfectly. I'm on a MacBook Pro Pro with OS.X 10.8.5.

But now, I plug my iPod and it makes iTunes unresponsive.

I get the "Connected" screen on the iPod, as well as briefly the 'syncing' screen but it does not sync. And then I try to access iTunes but it has crashed and is not responding.

If I wait a while, eventually iTunes comes back and the iPod tells me I can eject it, but I cannot see my iPod icon into iTunes.

Would appreciate any guidance on how to fix this. ! Thank you very much.

Hi Joe,

Thank you for the help. However, I tried it all up to trying with a different user account, and it still makes iTunes unresponsive. Once I give it a few minutes, iTunes comes back to life (and the iPod tells me I can safely disconnect it), but the iPod is still not recognized by iTunes.

I also went ahead and bought a new sync cable, but it didn't change anything.

I guess my only option now is to restore it all? Or should I try the Start Mode first?

Thanks again. I really hope we can figure something out, as Apple has discontinued the Classic and it's the only device that will handle all the music I own!

Hey Christina,

I would definitely test using Safe Mode first as the article describes. Please let me know if the issue continues while in Safe Mode.

Mac OS X: Follow this article to start up in Safe Mode. If the issue does not occur in Safe Mode, there may be login items or third party kernel extensions causing the issue.

Happy holidays,

Joe
